Currently, the inventory boasts more than 20 thousand items available for purchase.  The inventory includes Lathes, CNC Machines, Drill Presses, Maintenance Supplies, Woodworking Equipment, and too many others to name. Let’s take a closer look at Clausing and their history.

Founded by Paul Clausing in 1931, there were three factors that motivated him to enter the lathe industry. He purchased a South Bend Lathe and used it as a hobby lathe and began thinking. First, he believed he could make a better lathe than South Bend Lathes. Second, was the thought the his current career in the Monarch Film Company didn’t have a viable future. Finally, Paul clashing decided he wanted to be his own boss. So, Paul found a small business in Ottumwa, Iowa and began making hobby-sized lathes that were sold at Sears.

Paul didn’t do this alone however. In March of 1932, Otto moved to Iowa to work with his brother. Otto was three years older than Paul and had a string mechanical aptitude at an early age. When he was around 11, Otto would take apart his parent’s tabletop clock. This model in particular was called a grandfather’s clock, meaning it had a pendulum. Taking it apart may not be out of the ordinary for children, but putting it back together, and in working order, before his parent’s return was impressive. It was this that made him essential to his brothers business.

The original factory was a meager 2,000 sqft. And housed a few pieces of light machinery. The great depression took it’s toll however and this lead to Sears cancelling their orders for the hobby lathes they were creating. The primary product they began manufacturing was a lathe attachment called a slide rest. They were supplying these slide rests to a company called, Duro. With finances being dire and the business battling the depression, it wasn’t until 1935 that they were able to purchase a planer. This would allow Otto to plane the first lathe beds for woodturning lathes. In 1936, Clausing broke through with what would become a mainstay of their business. It was a screw-cutting lathe, that later evolved into the Series 100.
